Vegetable Gardening Can Be A Big Money Saver

Vegetable Gardening Can Be A Big Money Saver

If I told you that a little vegetable gardening could be a big money saver, you might not believe me. You'd probably be more excited if I told you that it was possible to grow gallons of gasoline in your garden.

Well, I'm not here to tell you about growing fuel for your vehicles, but I do want to convince you that growing vegetables can provide something just as valuable as fuel. Vegetables are fuel for your body, and they can be quite expensive, especially during the off-season.

I'm always amazed at the price of food in the grocery store. I'm talking about food that can be grown, much like a weed, in your own backyard - even in the off-season.

We are fond of squash here at the homestead, and we estimate one summer we harvested about 300 pounds of summer squash and nearly 200 pounds of winter squash. Anytime you can grow 500 pounds of food, with just a couple dozen seeds, that has to be a wonderful return on investment that can't be ignored.

Okay, so you don't like squash. There are hundreds of other vegetables to choose from that grow just as easy as squash. And, you'll probably have much better luck growing them. We have a relatively harsh environment here, whereas most of the rest of the country has an environment that is much more conducive to growing vegetables, so chances are good that you can do better than we can.

And, if you want vegetables in the off-season, build yourself an unheated greenhouse and raise cold hardy vegetables. This combination will allow you to extend your growing and harvesting season by several months. For some crops, I harvest all year long. Yes, vegetable gardening isn't just for summer anymore.

In America, our food travels great distances to reach us. All this costs more money as the price of fuel rises. Grow your own, and you nearly eliminate the cost of produce. In my mind, that makes vegetable gardening a great idea with respect to saving money. Plant your seeds and watch your money grow.
